Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, ordered an Indian General to kill LTTE leader Vellupillai Pirapaharan in cold blood when the latter attended a meeting under a white flag in September 1987. In a new book, the then chief of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF), Major General (retd.) Harkirat Singh, says he refused to carry out the order as “good soldiers do not shoot an adversary in the back.” He also says that as the Tigers began disarming in 1987, but India’s intelligence service, RAW, on Rajiv Gandhi’s orders, began arming anti-LTTE militant groups, triggering inter-Tamil violence.Maj. Gen. (retd) Harkirat Singh published his book ‘Intervention in Sri Lanka: The IPKF experience retold’ (available through Vijitha Yapa Publications) earlier this year. |

Colombo - Sri Lanka used its diplomatic channels to call on the British Ambassador, Dominic Chilcott, to the foreign ministry office expressed "deep displeasure" on Thursday over his remarks of Britain was against the tactics adopted by the Tiger guerrillas, but did not consider their demand for a separate state as illegal on early this week public meeting in Colombo. The British Ambassador also warned Sri Lanka to clean up its human rights record or risk international sanctions. "I am not saying that the political aspiration for Eelam is illegitimate, any more than I would argue that the Scottish National Party's (SNP) goal of an independent Scotland is illegitimate," the British Ambassador, Dominic Chilcott said in the meeting. |

In Sri Lanka, a person “disappears” every five hours, according to Mangala Samaraweera, the former foreign minister of Sri Lanka.Abductions and extrajudicial killings are commonplace.Mano Ganesan is working to change that. Ganesan is a leading human rights activist and an opposition member of the Sri Lankan Parliament. In 2006, Ganesan founded the Civil Monitoring Commission (CMC) and serves as its convener. Relatives of those abducted, “disappeared” and killed often register their complaints with the CMC rather than with the police or the national Human Rights Commission, in which they have little confidence. |

Sri Lanka’s GDP is about $27.4 billion. Its military expenditure alone accounts for a large portion of that. In Oct. 21, 2007, forecasted economic growth for this year was lowered to between 6.5 percent and 6.6 percent from an earlier projection of 7 percent, and the outlook for 2008 has been cut to 7.5 percent from 8 percent. It has been reported that Sri Lanka’s “inflation as measured on a 12-month moving average was 17.5 percent in September - its highest level in 13 years - rising from 17.3 percent in August and way above 11.2 percent in September last year”. On November 30, 07, the IMF warned Sri Lanka and “to take tough measures to cut subsidies, especially on fuel, in order to salvage the country's 27-billion dollar economy”. |

Report on Sri Lankan State Terror unleashed on minority Tamils
"..Extortion through telephone intimidation is going on unabated. The sad fact is that the victims are so threatened that they do not attempt to communicate with anyone. We too are helpless because in spite of the Bank account number and even the caller’s phone number having been furnished to the top ranking service personnel, noting tangible has been done. The victims even after paying the demanded sum do not talk about it to any one except those who they consider are reliable and that too under promise of confidentiality. One can imagine how terrified our people are about abductions by those in white vans or motor cycles, followed by corpses being thrown on roads. It is an irony that such vehicles move about quite freely even during curfew hours. .." |

The leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), V Pirapaharan, in his annual Heroes' Day statement put a heavy responsibility on the shoulders of the international community for the breakdown of the peace process. He said that the involvement of the international community to resolve the Tamil national question has been unhelpful and added that their failure to condemn unambiguously the military path of the current regime has created the present situation in the island. He asserted that the propping up of the genocidal Sinhala State by the international community through economic aid, military aid and subtle diplomatic efforts will be counterproductive. | |
