Australian Greens today demanded the resignation of Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews after a court overturned his decision to revoke the work visa of Mohammed Haneef, saying he had tarnished the country's reputation. "Today's vindication of Haneef by the Federal Court makes Minister Andrews' position as immigration minister untenable," Greens Senator Kerry Nettle said. She urged the government to offer Haneef an apology and compensation.
"Minister Andrews has tarnished Australia's reputation and should do the right thing by resigning as a minister," Nettle said adding "after this decision, the community is right to have no confidence in Minister Andrews or the Federal Government." The Bangalore doctor had to spend 25 days in detention before a charge of supporting a terrorist organisation was dropped. However, Treasurer Peter Costello said Andrews should not resign in the wake of the court's decision. "The court has made a decision," Costello said in Sydney. "That's a matter for the minister or the court" he said. When asked if Andrews should resign over the matter, Costello replied, "No." Courtesy: The Hindu http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/001200708211523.htm |
