World Water Day : Thank you for saving every drop says The Honourable Paul Lucas PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 March 2008

On World Water Day the Bligh Government has thanked South East Queenslanders for their ongoing commitment to saving every drop.Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Paul Lucas said the community is leading the way out of extreme Level 6 water restrictions."Along with a better wet season, residents are the real champions behind our improved water situation," said the Deputy Premier."South East Queenslanders have responded magnificently to this drought and made saving water part of their everyday lives."This is one of the main reasons why the Queensland Water Commission has judged it is safe to make the first relaxation of restrictions when our dams hit 40%.

"World Water Day is a good time for everyone to refocus on Target 140 to make sure we reach 40% at the earliest possible opportunity."Just having a 4 minute shower instead of 7 minutes can save up to 36 litres of water."The Queensland Government continues to play its part, with work on the $9 billion Water Grid recently passing the halfway mark.

"Construction is forging ahead on the 450-kilometre long Water Grid, which will provide unprecedented water security for South East Queensland," said Mr Lucas. "More than 247 kilometres of pipe has now been layed, that's almost 55 per cent of the total.

"On the Western Corridor Recycled Water Project, more than 142 kilometres is in the ground, which represents more than 69 per cent of the 205 kilometre total. "The Water Grid is an infrastructure project of significance and I look forward to reporting on its progress until completion later this year.
