The purpose of the forum is to present the current and factual information on the plight of the innocent Tamil civilians and the democratically elected Tamil parliamentarians and to request the Australian government to take urgent steps to ease this human tragedy in Sri Lanka.
Despite repeated requests by the international community for the resumption of the peace process, conditions deteriorate every day for the innocent Tamil civilians and to the Tamil parliamentarians as the Sri Lankan Government abrogated the Norway brokered 5-year long cease-fire agreement with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and is determined to find a military solution to a longstanding political problem.
The total Tamil population in Jaffna (the Northern peninsula) has not had access to basic food, fuel, medicines and other essential commodities for the last two yeras. The daily events of enforced disappearances, murder, and torture and denial of basic needs that are occurring in Sri Lanka constitute a crime against humanity. Tamil parliamentarian who spoke against these atrocities have been murdered (please see press reports at the end of this email). It is time that an international tribunal is established to address these atrocities because the legal system within Sri Lanka is currently incapable of effectively prosecuting these crimes. These inhumane acts can only be stopped by the international community by exerting political and economic pressure on the Sri Lankan Government. In view of the worsening human tragedy, we, the organisations representing Queensland Tamils, kindly invite you to participate in this forum.
