Sangakkara, batsman and propagandist extraordinaire

Leading Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara is currently in Australia to play cricket but he also appears to be auditioning for a job in Mahinda Rajapaksa's propaganda unit.

As he did on the England tour last year, Sangakkara takes every opportunity in Australia to suggest that his homeland has become a haven of peace and tranquility.

He did so again this week when sending a message to the protesters who plan to gather at the MCG on Boxing Day, calling for an Australian cricket boycott on future tours and matches against Sri Lanka.

"We are mature enough not to take these things personally. This (cricket tour) is one area they are trying to use to further their agenda. For us sports is beyond politics. We are ambassadors for our country," Sangakkara said.

Tunnel vision

A Tamil Refugee Council spokesman, Mal Bala, said Sangakkara's view of the country came from his tunnel vision as a member of the well-off Sinhalese community who was educated at an elite private school, Trinity College in Kandy.

"We all respect Sangakkara as a cricketer, but he would have no real idea how life is for the Tamils in the north and east of country," Bala said.

"These people have been kept in concentration camps after the war and now they are being repressed in everyday life by the military. Rape, murder and torture continues as the regime tries to apply a stranglehold on the Tamil population.

"Our protest is going ahead at full steam because we want to give the Australian public the truth about Sri Lanka not the sort of propaganda Sangakkara is peddling."

The Boxing Day protesters asked for a boycott on Sri Lanka until president Rajapaksa agrees to UN demands for an independent inquiry into war crimes and crimes against humanity at the end of the civil war in 2009 and until his regime and military ends the on-going persecution of Tamils.

A UN report has said at least 40,000 innocent Tamil civilians were murdered by Sri Lankan Army artillery and bombs while sheltering in hospitals, schools and other buildings. The civilians had been asked to go to these so-called "safe zones" by the Army, who then deliberately targeted them.

The Tamils in north-east Sri Lanka remain under the boot of the Sri Lankan Army, with the Indian Economic and Political Weekly reporting in June this year that –three years after the war — there was one soldier for every five people in the north of the country.

The 'other Sri Lanka'

"For us," said Sangakkara, "it's about showing the world what Sri Lanka is like now. People from outside should really come back and visit. If you don't see what's happening on the ground it's hard to change your opinion."

A few requests for Sangakkara, then, before we agree to head off on a trip.

Could you arrange a trip for us to all the detention centres in the country, where torture and other abuses remain a regular feature of daily life for imprisoned Tamils?

We guess that might be a bit difficult, given that the UN Human Rights Council was given a flat "no" from the Government six weeks ago when it asked Sri Lanka to allow the International Red Cross to visit detention centres. But surely a man of Sangakkara's connections could pull a few strings?

Could he also take us to the main Colombo police station to see how the investigation into the murder of the Sunday Leader newspaper editor, Lasantha Wickrametunge, is coming along?

It's been four years since he was gunned down in broadlight on his way to work after he forecast his death in his newspaper, knowing he had crossed the Rajapaksa clan with his gutsy, honest, critical journalism. So far there's been no sign that it's being investigated, let alone solved, and, funnily enough, his wife, Sonali Samarasinghe Wickrametunge, has fled to the US in fear.

I would have also liked to have caught up with his successor in the editor's chair, Frederica Jansz, but I'm told she's also fled the country, after she got a death threat from the defence minister, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who just happens to be the president's brother. Those Rajapaksas' certainly like to keep it all in the family, don't they?

While we are at the police station maybe we can check on the investigations into the other 30 or so journalists who have been killed or "disappeared" in the past few years. Surely the men on the beat must have a few leads by now? They haven't? Ah well, I suppose policing is a tough business these days.

After we wrap things up in Colombo, could we head north? We'd like to go to Mullivaikal, where thousands of innocent Tamils were slaughtered in 2009 and now lie in mass graves. That is, of course, if the bodies haven't disappeared, due to the Army using acid to cover up their war crimes.

Maybe, also, we could see the site of the town's hospital, which became a pile of rubble after the Army mortar bombs and artillery had targeted it and killed at least 70 people in one hit.

Then, seeing as we are in the area, could we also visit the prison in which several Jaffna University students were lodged recently after being declared terrorists for lighting candles to commemorate the Tamil war dead ?

Finally, there's one last thing to organise, and we are off.

We've got a few Tamil refugees here who wouldn't mind having look at the old country as well. Could we bring them along ? We reckon it would be nice for them to see their old friends and families, if they haven't been locked up.

The trouble is they keep saying if they went back it would be a rather limited tour, something about a "white van" trip between the airport and the torture chamber at Negombo prison.

It wouldn't be like that, Kumar, would it?

Australian Tamil rights advocate decries deportation from Singapore

An 81-year-old Australian doctor says he was locked in a small cell without food, water or toilet access for more than five hours, before being deported back to Australia from Singapore on Saturday.

Dr Brian Senewiratne is a Sri Lankan-born Australian who has been a long-time critic of the Sri Lankan Government over its treatment of Tamils.

He was on his way to Malaysia and Indonesia to speak at forums on the Tamil refugee issue, when his deportation took place.

SENEWIRATNE: There's one thing I might add to your introduction which I heard. I am actually a Singhalese from the Majority community. I am not a member of the Tamil community and my cousin was the previous president of Sri Lanka. So I've got nothing to gain personally from getting involved in all this except the good name of Australia, because its handling of the asylum seeker problem is a violation of the UN Refugee Convention, the UN Rights of the Child and Human Rights Convention.

COCHRANE: OK.

SENEWIRATNE: So I thought I would just add that to your introduction.

COCHRANE: That is helpful to give us the context of where you're coming from and how you fit into the political and ethnic background of this obviously highly charged issue. So tell us from what...

SENEWIRATNE: And I have been campaigning from 1948, when as a 16 year-old boy I protested at the disenfranchisement of the plantation Tamils of Indian origin.

COCHRANE: Well, we might come up to recent times and talk about why you were heading to Malaysia in the first place. What was the point of your trip?

SENEWIRATNE: The point of the trip was that I was invited to come to Malaysia by concerned Malaysians who said, look, Malaysia is part of this refugee problem and to either allow them to sink in the ocean or to lock them up in Malaysian so-called detention centres or whatever is unacceptable. Will you please come and give us a run down of the situation regarding the push factors in Sri Lanka as well as the plight of the refugees and I said yes, beside of the fact that I'm 81 and in heart failure. I will come.

COCHRANE: Were you planning on engaging in any protests or any potentially illegal activities?

SENEWIRATNE: No, I had two closed doors invited meetings of senior Malaysian human rights and leading members of society. They were closed meetings. They were not advertised and there were two meetings, one in Jahore, which is just adjoining Singapore and in Kuala Lumpur. They were not open meetings. I was not there with a megaphone on the streets urging revolts or anything like that.

COCHRANE: OK. So those were your plans. You've left Australia, you've arrived in Singapore. What happened to you in Singapore?

SENEWIRATNE: Right. I left Australia at 11.45 on Thursday 13th. December, arrived at Singapore Changi Airport at 5 am. I filled up the immigration form that they give you. I took my passport and went to the immigration, customs counter. The guy typed in my details and then looked at me and looked at the screen and raised his eyebrows and this raising of the eyebrows went on three times and I realised that there seemed to be some problem. And he said, a momento, I'll just get my boss. The boss came and led me to a room, maybe ten foot by ten foot, maybe a little bigger, with a couple of seats and I was asked to sit there and there was no toilet, no food, no drink, no nothing. And I sat there 8.30, (word indistinct) 5.30, 6, 6.30, 7, and in the meantime there were Tamil boys or boys coming in and out talking in Tamil which is the language I don't understand, but nothing happened to me.

COCHRANE: Did you at any point request further facilities from the airport staff?

SENEWIRATNE: No, I didn't request security from anybody, because there was nothing to secure.

COCHRANE: Not security, any facilities. Did you ask for a drink, water, a toilet break?

SENEWIRATNE: Oh, well I said, look, I've not had food from 4 o'clock this morning. They said well, that's tough luck.

COCHRANE: And what did they say. Why did they say they were keeping you detained in the airport?

SENEWIRATNE: The deportation order came, was handed to me later and if you want me to read it out right now I can.

COCHRANE: Can you give us the overall gist of it. What's the main thrust of it?

SENEWIRATNE: It's one sentence. This is to inform you that you are being refused entry into Singapore for 1, 2, 3, 4. The fourth reason is tick, being ineligible for the issue of a pass under immigration policies. That was handed to me by the armed guard with a revolver in his pocket who took me to the aeroplane.

COCHRANE: That's a fairly vague reason for denying you access and deporting you. Do you have any, were you given any further ideas perhaps verbally about why you were being detained?

SENEWIRATNE: Why I asked, what are these, what exactly do you mean by immigration policies? The police officer with a gun said, well, I'm only a police officer. I said, well, ask the boss who sent you there to explain to me what these immigration policies are? He said, look, you are going to the plane, right. So now you come with me and that was it. And I said, what about my passport? He said, no, you're not going to get your passport. I said can I go to Indonesia where I had a hotel booked. They said no, you're not going anywhere. You're going straight back to this place and they opened the door of the plane, took me to the last, one but the last row, told me to strap myself in and he said goodbye and left, that's it.

COCHRANE: Now, have you been in contact. Well first of all, let me ask you, have you been prevented from travelling before, especially to Malaysia?

SENEWIRATNE: Yes, I was. In 2008, I had an international award awarded to me in recognition of my contribution to human rights by 22 groups in Canada, these are NGOs in Canada and I was invited to Canada to deliver my acceptance speech and receive the award, which I haven't, which I did.

On the way back, I was asked by Malaysia, can you please come to Malaysia. There are about 20,000 people here waiting to hear you and deliver the same address. I said, yep, if you've got police permission and it's all above board. He said it's a dinner party for a start. Can you come? I said yep, of course I can. So I flew into Kuala Lumpur, I got exactly the same treatment. I was kept in a room without food or drink or water or anything like that and then walked before a lady with a veil on her head who said I am deporting you. I said on what grounds. She said because your presence in Malaysia is a threat to Malaysian security. I said Madam, if an unarmed doctor on medicine, I was 78 at that time. If a doctor of medicine who had never carried a weapon in his life and never had advocated violence is a threat to Malaysian security, then your security can't be crash hot. He said I don't care what you think of Malaysia, but you are being deported right now.

COCHRANE: OK. So let's return to the incident that happened on Saturday, your most recent detention in Singapore. You've explained to us the official reasons that you were given fairly vague reasons relating to immigration policy. Why do you believe you were detained and deported?

SENEWIRATNE: I believe that the government of Sri Lanka is in cahoots with Malaysia certainly, possibly Indonesia, certainly Australia, because I was harassed even on the arrival in Brisbane where I've been a resident for 37 years and an Associate Professor of Medicine. I couldn't even get back to this country, back ...

COCHRANE: What was the problem in the Brisbane airport?

SENEWIRATNE: At Brisbane airport, I was searched and detained for at the immigration people who went through every single stitch of luggage that I was carrying for nearly three hours and then the immigration officer who had been a patient of mine, I think, because he came to me and said Doctor, don't hold it against us. We are not responsible. I said look, I know that, but I want to know who is responsible?

COCHRANE: Have you been able to get in contact with the Australian authorities since returning?

SENEWIRATNE: No, I didn't. Since returning this time, yesterday?

COCHRANE: Yes.

SENEWIRATNE: No, I haven't, because the Foreign Minister of Australia is currently distributing your money and mine in Rajapaksa's regime 35 million dollars and he's actually in Colombo. I'm sending a letter to the Department of Foreign Affairs right now and I'm carrying a letter, a copy of a letter, in another hour's time to my member of Federal member of Parliament one, Kevin Rudd and asking him what he is going to do about it.

COCHRANE: Who is, of course, Australia's former prime minister. What do you hope that Kevin Rudd will do?

SENEWIRATNE: I don't care what he does, but I am a member of his. I have voted for him. He has known me for 20 years. He called me Brian introduces me to other people as a worker, both in health as well as in human rights and he knows me very well. And I'm going to say, Kevin, you have to put your money where your mouth is and tell me exactly what you're going to do about it. I'm sending a copy to Sarah Hanson-Young and to Senator Lee Rhiannon and former senator Bob Brown to table this in parliament and I'm going to send a copy to Bishop Desmond Tutu whom I have met a couple of years ago and whose very well, who very well realises the situation and I'm asking him whether he can contact Justice Navanethem Pillay in the UN Human Rights Council to table it.

Australian Government extends tourist visas for parents of Australians

The Gillard Government will extend tourist visas for parents of
Australian citizens and permanent residents to enable them to visit
their family in Australia for longer, the Minister for Immigration and
Citizenship, Chris Bowen MP, announced today.

'I know that many people are patiently waiting in the queue for a
parent visa so we want to provide more generous tourist visas to
enable regular extended family visits,' Mr Bowen said.

'The government will grant five-year tourist visas with a 12-month
stay on each entry to suitable applicants who have applied for a
parent visa outside Australia.

'The government will also consider tourist visas of up to three years
with a 12-month stay on each entry for people not currently in the
parent visa queue.

'These changes recognise the valuable role parents play in assisting
their children and grandchildren in Australia and the social benefits
such visits provide.'

The changes are expected to be in place by the end of this year.

'Tourist visa grants will be considered on a case-by-case basis and
will enable parents to spend more time in Australia with their
families while they wait for a parent visa,' Mr Bowen said.

'To be granted a tourist visa, applicants must meet Australia's health
and character requirements, have access to adequate funds, have health
insurance to cover any healthcare costs during their stay, and intend
a genuine visit to Australia.'

Tourist visa holders will be subject to a visa condition limiting
applications for further visas while they are in Australia. As with
all tourist visa holders, they will be expected to spend some time
outside Australia between visits to their families.

Coalition Call to Automatically Return All Sri Lankan Asylum Seekers Unethical and Unlawful

The Australian Tamil Congress is shocked by remarks made by the
Coalition that all asylum seekers from Sri Lanka would be
automatically returned without due process. Such an act would not only
be unlawful and in breach of Australia's obligations under
international law, but also gravely unethical.

"The Australian Tamil Congress believes all claims of asylum should be
assessed on a case-by-case basis," said Mr. Bala Vigneswaran from the
Australian Tamil Congress. "From our experience having worked with a
large number of Tamil refugees we know for certain of the continuing
persecution of Tamils, human rights activists and media workers in Sri
Lanka, and the continuing effects of torture and trauma experienced by
refugees currently in Australia. Such a generalised statement from
responsible political parties only dilutes and over simplifies this
very real problem," he added.

These statements coincide with the visit to Australia of a group of
Sri Lankan journalists of both Tamil and Sinhala backgrounds, to
participate in the screening this week of their documentary "Silenced
Voices - Tales of Sri Lankan Journalists in Exile".

The documentary highlights the dangerous life of death threats,
abductions and indefinite detention faced by media workers in Sri
Lanka which hails itself as one of the most dangerous places in the
world for media workers. Mr. Bashana Abeywardane, coordinator for
Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka and Mr. Lokeesan Anputhurai,
former correspondent from the war-zone for TamilNet are willing to be
interviewed.

Deportation of Sri Lankan Asylum Seeker with pending UN Torture Investigation

This afternoon, a Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seeker who was tortured in
Sri Lanka and is currently the victim in a pending investigation by
the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture informed RISE that he was
suddenly moved from the community into Maribyrnong Immigration
Detention Centre pending his forced removal from Australia.

In October 2011, a communication was sent on behalf of the asylum
seeker ("Mr X") to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other
Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. The office of the
Special Rapporteur took immediate interest in Mr X's case, writing to
the Australian government seeking urgent clarification and importantly
stating:

I urge your Excellency's Government to take all necessary measures to
guarantee that the rights and freedoms of Mr. X are respected and, in
the event that your investigations support or suggest the above
allegations [of torture] to be correct, the accountability of any
person responsible for the alleged violations should be ensured. I
also request that your Excellency's Government adopt effective
measures to prevent the recurrence of these acts.

The Australian government never responded to this urgent request.
Instead, preparations were commenced for Mr X's removal from
Australia. Mr. X was informed that he would be assisted by the
International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to voluntarily return
to Sri Lanka. However, IOM has no protection mandate. Furthermore
monitoring agencies with a protection mandate, such as the UNHCR, ICRC
and the Sri Lankan Human rights commission, are prevented from
accessing a number of detention centres in Sri Lanka.

Ramesh Fernandez says, "throughout the time that RISE has worked with
Mr X he has continued to receive extensive medical treatment in
relation to the psychological and physical effects of torture and
trauma.

Mr. X is being removed to Sri Lanka forcibly with the Department of
Immigration's full knowledge of his condition". It should be noted
that in September 2011 a report was published in the British Medical
Journal saying that doctors in Sri Lanka are complicit in torture by
failing to report the victims of torture.

At the UNCAT's (UN committee against torture) 47th session in Geneva,
in November 2011, during which there was an open session on the
prevalence of torture and ill treatment in Sri Lanka, organisations
such as UK freedom from torture and Amnesty International have
provided evidence that Tamils continue to be at risk of torture,
killings and arbitrary and indefinite detention under the prevention
of terrorism act even after May 2009, when the Sri Lankan government
declared victory over the Tamil militants. In May 2012, the British
High court overturned removal orders of scores of Sri Lankans from the
UK after evidence was presented before the court that those forcibly
returned to Sri Lanka face arbitrary arrest and torture. RISE received
reports from NGOs on the ground in Sri Lanka that the number of
abductions and killings have increased this year in Sri Lanka.

The removal of Mr X in these circumstances constitutes a breach of the
non-refoulement obligations under the Convention Against Torture and
Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. It
indicates a disturbing disregard for the lives of Sri Lankan asylum
seekers, and a flagrant disrespect for ongoing processes under
international law, on the part of the Australian government.

RISE urges all recipients and all those concerned regarding the fate
of Sri Lankan asylum seekers to petition the Australian government,
the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, and the Department of
Immigration to halt the forced removal in Mr X's case.

Royal Run for Research - Tomorrow Sunday 22nd July 2012

The 25th annual Royal Run for Research is being held on Sunday 22 July 2012 to raise money for clinical research conducted at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

Organised and run by the RBWH Physiotherapy Department in conjunction with RBWH Foundation, the Royal Run for Research starts in the City Botanic Gardens at 8am, with the course covering Kangaroo Point, South Bank and the Goodwill Bridge.

Participants can either choose to do the 8km Run or the 6km Walk, and can register as an individual, a family or as part of a group.

Entry fees for the Royal Run for Research are $25 for individuals and $60 for a family of 4 people (minimum of 2 children under 16 years). A 10% discount will be given to groups of 4 or more people registering at once.

Members of MDA National (a major sponsor of the event) are entitled to FREE entry. MDA National have generously offered to cover the registration costs of their members as a sign of their support.

Hindus in the Gold Coast have formed the Gold Coast Hindu Cultural
Association (GCHCA) to serve the ever increasing Hindu community needs
in South East Queensland region.
The Hindu culture promotes love, respect, honouring others and
humbling one's own ego so that the inner nature, which is naturally
pure and modest, will shine forth. Hinduism is an ancient philosophy
and a way of life that includes an advanced system of ethics,
meaningful rituals, practices, traditions and beliefs. It is rooted in
prehistoric Vedic culture and draws on a common system of Dharmic
values. These values advocate charity, harmony, moral wellbeing and
the universal betterment of humanity.

Practice of Hindu culture in Australia is on the increase and the
Australian census identifies Hinduism as the fourth largest religion.
The Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association (GCHCA Inc.), based in one
of the fastest growing regions of Australia, aims to promote Hindu
culture among the community by being inclusive and supportive of
friendship, respect, peace and tolerance. In particular, the
not-for-profit association will strive to promote and foster Hindu
cultural activities, classical literature, music, dance and spiritual
education by providing resources and facilities at the proposed "Hindu
Cultural and Education Centre".

The Association is planning to have its inaugural AGM on 17th of
August with the ardent support of the members from Hindu Community who
saw the urgent need to serve and support the cultural, educational,
spiritual and moral well-being of the South East Queensland region's
rapidly growing Hindu population.

The interim committee has finalized the constitution for the approval
at the AGM and now giving the opportunity for every prospective
"Founder Member" to consider joining before the AGM. If you would like

தாய்த்தமிழ்ப் பள்ளி பிரிஸ்பேனிலுள்ள தன்னார்வலர்களால் நடத்தப்படும் ஒரு வார
இறுதி தமிழ்ப் பள்ளி. 2011 வருடம் ஏப்ரல் மாதம் தொடங்கி மவுன்ட் ஆம்மனி
வளாகத்தில் வகுப்புகளை நடத்திவருகிறோம். குயின்ஸ்லாந்து கல்வித்துறையின்
ஆங்கிலமல்லாத மொழிகளுக்கான பரிந்துரைகளின்படி நாம் தமிழ் வகுப்புகளை இங்கு
நடத்துகிறோம்.

தற்போது சன்னிபேங்க் பகுதியில் புதிய வளாகத்தை வருகிற ஞாயிறு (22 ஜூலை 2012)

Vanakkam,
Thaai Tamil school is an after hours Tamil school run by volunteers. We
conduct weekly Tamil classes as per Queensland Education LOTE prescribed
curriculum. We have been conducting tamil classe at Mount Ommaney since
April 2011.

We are starting a new campus at Sunnybank area from 22nd July 2012 for the
benefit of parents living in that area. Classes will be held every sunday
morning 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM.

சித்திரைப் புத்தாண்டும் பை என்ற மாறிலியும்

சித்திரையில் புத்தாண்டா, தையில் புத்தாண்டா என்று வெட்டி மடிபவர்களில்
எத்தனை பேர் உண்மையிலேயே இப்படி ஆண்டுகளைக் கணக்கீடு செய்வது பற்றி
ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்திருப்பார்கள்? தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களில் எப்போது தமிழர்கள்
புத்தாண்டு கொண்டாடினார்கள் என்று தேடிப்பார்த்தால், தேடுபவர்களைப்
பொருத்து தை, சித்திரை, ஆவணி என்று வெவ்வேறு விடை கிடைக்கும். தமிழர்கள்
ஆண்டுகளையும், மாதங்களையும், கிழமைகளையும், நாள்களையும் எப்படிக்
கணக்குப் போட்டார்கள்? நமக்குத் தெரியாது.

சித்திரைதான் புத்தாண்டு என்று வாதிடுபவர்களுக்க்குச் சித்திரை வேண்டும்
என்பதை விட, தை வேண்டாம் என்பதுதான் முக்கியம். கருணாநிதி ஆணையிட்டால்
அது நடந்து விடக் கூடாது என்பதற்காக மூர்க்கத் தனமாக எதிர்ப்பவர்களைப்
பார்க்கிறேன். அதே போல், சித்திரை வேண்டாம் என்பவர்களுக்கும் இது
சமஸ்கிருத வெறுப்பு, பார்ப்பன வெறுப்பு, ஜெயலலிதா மீது கடுப்பு
என்பவைதான் உந்துதல்.

போகட்டும். ஆனால், சித்திரைப் புத்தாண்டைத் தாக்குபவர்கள் ஒரு புராணக்
கதையை மட்டும் எடுத்து வைத்துக் கொண்டு இது அறிவியலுக்குப் புறம்பானது;
பழங்குப்பை; ஆங்கில, திருவள்ளுவர் ஆண்டுகளைப் போலத் தொடர்ந்து வராமல்,

இயற்கையின் நிலை சுழற்சி நிலைதான். இதுதான் முற்கால மனிதனின் மிகப்
பெரிய கண்டுபிடிப்பு. பருவங்கள் சுழல்கின்றன. பருவநிலையை வைத்து,
வானிலையை ஓரளவு கணிக்கலாம். அதை வைத்துப் பருவத்தே பயிர் செய்யலாம்.
கதிரவன், கோள்கள், விண்மீன்கள், நிலவு என்று விண்ணில் மிதக்கும்
உருவங்களைப் பார்த்து வருங்காலத்தை ஓரளவுக்குக் கணிக்கலாம் என்று மனிதன்
கண்டு பிடித்தது மிகப்பெரும் சாதனை.

மேலைநாட்டு (ஆங்கில) ஆண்டு முறை அல்லது கிறித்தவ ஆண்டு முறை ஒன்றும்
மிகப்பெரிய அறிவியல் சாதனை அல்ல. அதிலும் எண்ணற்ற பிழைகள் இருந்தன.
1582ம் ஆண்டில் போப் கிரெகொரி ஆட்சியில்தான் பிழைகளைத் திருத்தி இன்றைய
நிலையை எட்டி இருக்கிறார்கள்.

தமிழ் ஆண்டு முறை நிச்சயமாக வடவர்களிடமிருந்து இரவல் வாங்கியதுதான்.
இதில் ஐயம் இல்லை. இன்றைக்கு நாம் பெரும்பாலும் கிரெகொரியன் ஆண்டு
முறையைத்தானே பின்பற்றுகிறோம். அது எப்படி நமக்கு வசதியாக இருக்கிறதோ,
அதே போல்தான் பழங்காலத் தமிழர்கள் வடவர்களிடமிருந்து ஆண்டு முறையை
வாங்கிக் கொண்டார்கள். அநத ஆண்டுப் பெயர்களுக்கு எவரோ புராணக் கதையைக்
கற்பித்ததால் மட்டும் அது அறிவியலுக்குப் புறம்பானது ஆகாது.

திருவள்ளுவர் ஆண்டு முறை என்று சொல்லும் முறையும் அறிவியலை அடிப்படையாகக்
கொண்டது ஆகாது. முதலில், திருவள்ளுவர் ஆண்டு முறை என்பதே 20ம்
நூற்றாண்டில் படைத்ததுதான். இது வடவர்களின் சுழற்சி ஆண்டு முறையை
மறுத்து, மேலையர்களின் தொடர்ச்சி ஆண்டு முறையைப் பின்பற்றி,
திருவள்ளுவரின் பிறந்த ஆண்டு கிறிஸ்து பிறப்பதற்கு 31 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு
முன்னால் என்று கணித்து, தை முதல் நாளை ஆண்டின் முதல் நாளாய்க் கொண்டு
வருவது. திருவள்ளுவர் எந்த ஆண்டு பிறந்தார் என்பதற்குச் சரியான அறிவியல்
சான்றுகள் ஏதும் நம்மிடம் இல்லை. தமிழறிஞர்களுக்கும் தெரியாது.
தற்காலத் தமிழறிஞர்கள், திருவள்ளுவரின் காலத்தைக் கி.மு. இரண்டாம்
நூற்றாண்டில் இருந்து கி.பி. எட்டாம் நூற்றாண்டு வரை எனக்
கணிக்கிறார்கள். இதை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு எப்படி ஒரு ஆண்டு முறையை
அறிவியலின் அடிப்படையில் அமைக்க முடியும்? சரி, திருவள்ளுவருக்கு
முன்னர், சங்கத் தமிழர்கள் எந்த ஆண்டு முறையைப் பின்பற்றினார்கள்? இந்தத்
தொடராண்டு முறையின் சிக்கலே அதுதான். ஏதாவது ஒரு புள்ளியில் இருந்து
கணக்கிட வேண்டும். அந்தப் புள்ளிக்கு முன்னால் என்ன என்று கேட்டால் திணற
வேண்டும்.

ஆமாம், நிச்சயமாக என்று சொல்லலாம். தமிழர்கள் பின்பற்றும் இந்து ஆண்டு
முறை, சூரிய சித்தாந்தம் என்ற நூலின் அடிப்படையில் அமைந்தது. இதன்

ஆர்வமுள்ளவர்கள் தரவிறக்கிப் படியுங்கள். ஆண்டு முறை வரிசையைப்
பிழையில்லாமல் துல்லியமாகக் கணக்கிடுவது எளிதல்ல. மேலை நாட்டவர்கள் 1500
ஆண்டுகளாகப் பின்பற்றி வந்த முறையை 1582ல்தான் திருத்தினார்கள். இந்து
ஆண்டு முறையை வழி வகுக்கும் சூரிய சித்தாந்தம் ஏறத்தாழ கி.மு. மூன்றாம்
நூற்றாண்டில் படைத்துப் பின்னர் பலர் அதைத் திருத்தி 12ம்
நூற்றாண்டுக்குள் முறைப் படுத்தப் பட்டது என்கிறது விக்கிப்பீடியா

அதில் இருக்கும் குறிப்புகள் அது எழுதப்பட்ட காலத்தில் உலகின் அறிவியல்
உச்சத்தைத் தொட்டிருக்க வேண்டும் என்பது தெளிவாகத் தெரிகிறது.
காலக்கணக்கை மிகத் துல்லியமாகவே கணக்கிட்டிருக்கிறது. அந்தக் கணக்குகள்
அலுப்புத் தட்டுபவை என்பவர்களுக்கு வேறு ஒரு கொசுறு கொடுக்கலாம்.

உலகம் உருண்டையா தட்டையா என்று மேலைநாடுகள் வெகுகாலம் தடுமாறிக்
கொண்டிருந்தன என்பது உங்களுக்குத் தெரிந்திருக்கலாம். எகிப்தியர்களும்,
கிரேக்கர்களும் உருண்டையான உலகத்தின் சுற்றளவைப் பண்டைக்காலத்திலேயே

ஆனால், சூரிய சித்தாந்தம் கோள்களின் நிலையைப் பற்றிச் சொல்லிக் கொண்டு
போகும் போது, போகிற போக்கில் பூமியின் விட்டத்தையும், சுற்றளவையும்
கணக்கிடச் சூத்திரம் தருகிறது. அதாவது பூமி உருண்டையானது என்பதை இயல்பாக
எடுத்துக் கொள்கிறது. இது ஒன்றும் தெய்வக் குற்றம் இல்லை.

அதாவது பை என்ற மாறிலியை பத்தின் வர்க்க மூலம் அல்லது 1.3163 என்று எடை
போட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். பிறகு, சைன், கோசைன் பட்டியல்களின் மூலம் இதை
இன்னும் திருத்தி பை என்ற மாறிலி (10800/3438) அல்லது 3.14136 என்று

என்ற விடை வரும். பண்டைய இந்தியர்கள் இவ்வளவு துல்லியமாக சைன், கோசைன்

ஆண்டு முறையில் பிழை அவ்வளவாக இல்லாமல் கணக்கிட முடிந்தது. இதற்கு
அறிவியல் சான்றுகள் இல்லை என்று புறந்தள்ளுவது பொருத்தமற்றது.

சரி, சரி, இதெல்லாம், பாட்டி கதை. இப்போதுதான் அணுக்கடியாரமே வந்து
விட்டதே. இன்னும் ஏன் இதைக் கட்டிக் கொண்டு அழ வேண்டும் என்று
கேட்கலாம்தாம். இன்றைய தமிழ் ஆண்டு முறையும் இந்திய அரசின் ஆண்டு முறைக்
கணக்கோடு இணங்கி அணுக்கடியாரக் கணக்கை எல்லாம் ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு பஞ்சாங்கம்
பார்ப்பதுதான்! பழைய பஞ்சாங்கத்தை விடுங்காணும். இந்தச் சுழற்சி முறையை
ஏன் கட்டிக் கொண்டு அழ வேண்டும், அதிலும் ஏன் விக்கிரம, சக ஆண்டு
என்றெல்லாம் சொல்ல வேண்டும் என்று கேட்கிறீர்களா? சரி, வடநாட்டு
மன்னர்கள் பெயரில் இருக்கும் ஆண்டு முறை வேண்டாம் என்றால் விட்டு
விடுங்கள். திருவள்ளுவர் போலச் சரியான காலம் கணக்கிட முடியாத தமிழ்ப்
புலவர்களை விட்டு விட்டு, அதியமான், பாரி போன்ற தமிழ்ப் பெருவள்ளல்களின்
காலக் கணக்கை வேண்டுமானால் எடுத்துக் கொள்ளுங்களேன்?

அது என்ன 60 ஆண்டு சுழற்சி? அது வியாழன் என்ற கோள் ஒரு முறை கதிரவனைச்
சுற்றி வர எடுத்துக் கொள்ளும் காலம். அதை இந்துக்கள் மட்டுமல்ல,
சீனர்களும் பல்லாயிரக் கணக்கான ஆண்டுகளாய்ப் பின்பற்றி
வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். பருவகாலம் போல், இந்தச் சுழற்சி முறையிலும்
வானிலைக் குறிப்புகள் பொதிந்திருக்கின்றன. "தாது வருஷப் பஞ்சம்" என்பது
போல ஆண்டின் பெயரை வைத்து ஆண்டுப் பலன்களைச் சொல்பவர்கள், பல்லாயிரக்
கணக்கான ஆண்டுகளாய்த் தொடர்ந்து நடந்து வந்திருப்பவற்றை வைத்துப் பலன்
சொல்லுகிறார்களா என்று ஆராய்ந்து பார்க்க வேண்டும். இந்தச் சுழற்சிகள்,
இன்னும் எத்தனை எத்தனை வட்டங்களுக்குள்ளோ, வெளியோ விரிந்து போகின்றன
என்று பார்க்க வேண்டும். எல் நினோ(El Nino), லா நினா (La Nina) போன்ற
பெருநீரோட்டங்கள் உலகளாவிய வானிலையைப் பாதிப்பது போல் இன்னும் என்னென்ன
சுழற்சிகள் இருந்திருக்கின்றன என்று ஒப்பு நோக்க வேண்டும்.

தற்காலத்தில் தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டு கொண்டாடுபவர்கள் சித்திரைத் திருநாளைக்
கொண்டாடிவிட்டு, மேம்போக்காகப் பலன் பார்ப்பதோடு சரி. சுழற்சி முறை,
தொடர்ச்சி முறை, என்பதை எல்லாம் வேறுபடுத்திப் பார்ப்பதெல்லாம் மறந்தாகி
விட்டது. ஆங்கில ஆண்டு முறைதாம் நம் வாழ்க்கை என்றாகி விட்டதே.
நம்மவர்கள் முறைகள் எல்லாம் மூட நம்பிக்கை என்று புறந்தள்ளுகிறோம்.

Australian man feared taken by 'secret police' operated by Rajapaksa family in Sri Lanka

An Australian man who is missing in Sri Lanka has been kidnapped by the country's "secret police", his family says.The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed a 42-year-old man from New South Wales has been missing since last week. It is believed the man is Premakumar Gunaratnam, a political activist involved with the People's Struggle Movement in Sri Lanka.

The Australian High Commissioner in Colombo has spoken to senior Sri Lankan government officials to request their help finding him.Mr Gunaratnam's wife, Champa Somaratna, said in a statement his family knew secret police were responsible for abducting him. "My husband is an Australian citizen," she said. "We know the secret police have taken him. Without international intervention we know what they will do to him."

Reports suggest Mr Gunaratnam has been abducted along with fellow activist Dimithu Attygalle. Both activists were reportedly preparing for the first convention of the Frontline Socialist Party, a party formed by dissidents from the opposition party.

Award for Outstanding Achievements at Schools by Tamil Students in 2012

Tamil Association will be calling for nominations for this award from Queensland school students of Tamil origin. In order to maintain transparency, objectivity and impartiality in the selection process, the award will be available for one student from each grade from school years 3, 5, 7, 9 & 12. This award will be given using NAPLAN and QSA results for the nominated students. NAPLAN tests are not available for grades 1, 2, 4,6, 8 and 11.

The purpose of this award is to recognize students who show outstanding and demonstrated academic achievement in schools. It is meant to encourage and reward students who work hard and give their best effort in school, often in the face of various challenges to their schooling and learning.

To be eligible for the Tamil Association's Award for Achievement, students at the awarding grades level must:

· Complete the official nomination form with two page summary of achievements by the nominee

· Be nominated by parents, teacher, friends, and/ or relatives

· Be endorsed by parents

· Provide certified copies of all awards and achievements certificates

· Adhere to the terms and conditions

· Send the nomination on or before the closing date.

Official Nomination form will be sent to you later.

We will be forming a Award Committee and encourage parents and teachers to be part of of it. Expression of interests are welcome.
