Sri Lanka - Bring to justice the perpetrators of war crimes and genocide against the Tamils
Wednesday, 24 June 2009
The Australians for Human Rights for the Voiceless (AHRV) in partnership with the Centre for War Victims and Human Rights in Canada will be collecting information from the Tamil Diaspora across Australia on those family members and relatives in Sri Lanka who are missing, or have been injured, disabled or deceased as a result of the Sri Lankan government offensive. This initiative will be conducted in parallel to other countries including, UK, USA, Germany, France, New Zealand to name a few. The sensitive information will be collated in a secure database by volunteers who have taken the oath of confidentiality and in professional manner to meet international standards. Information is collected in accordance with the Human Rights Information and Documentation System (HURIDOCS) format, which also meets UN standards.
The information will be used to verify the thousands of Tamils feared missing and/or deceased as a result of the Sri Lankan government offensive. Furthermore, it will help to establish accountability for the nearly 300,000 Tamil civilians trapped in military run internment camps where independent media and independent monitors are denied access.
The personal information will be stored in a secure manner and will be used to pursue the possibility of taking action to bring to justice the perpetrators of war crimes against the Tamils. Statistical reports will be provided to the Australian foreign ministry, media, human rights organizations and NGOs for action.
