Wrong priorities in Sri Lanka - Mr Walgampaya should be summoned to DFAT - Sydney Morning Herald

Wrong priorities in Sri Lanka
A MONTH after Sri Lankan forces crushed the last resistance by the separatist Tamil Tigers, the island's conflict has faded from the world's news bulletins. Yet 280,000 Tamil civilians remain in government detention camps, under what are reported to be conditions of privation, while officials screen them - in a process of so far indefinite length - for hidden Tiger fighters and cadres.Among them, we now learn, are three Australian passport holders of Tamil extraction who were in the combat zone, whether involved with the rebels or just helping relatives is not known. Sri Lanka's high commissioner in Canberra, Senaka Walgampaya, says his government doesn't know who they are or their whereabouts, but airily states they will be subject to the same screening as any other internees. This is an extraordinary claim, pointing to either neglect of duty by Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in making concerns for the safety and wellbeing of our nationals known to Sri Lankan authorities, or Colombo wilfully ignoring Canberra's approaches. Either way, Mr Walgampaya should be summoned to DFAT forthwith and the concerns spelt out to him.

Is the Sri Lankan Tamil nation moving towards extinction? By Satheesan Kumaaran
Sunday, 14 June 2009

Although many countries around the world urge the Sri Lankan government to fulfill the political demands of Tamils through peaceful means, these countries have shown little interest to jump into the conflict to make a deal between the warring Tamils and Sinhalese.  All question the legitimacy of the global governments who once said that Sri Lanka should be brought to court of justice, but then changed their tone saying that Sri Lanka should embrace the Tamils, leaving aside what has happened during the military operations against innocent Tamils in the guise of fighting the LTTE. Global governments still have failed to acknowledge the fact that the Tamils have grievances and they were up in arms not just for fun, but because of the Sri Lankan state’s continuous violence against Tamils who protested peacefully for thirty years to attain their political demands.  The de facto Tamil state was perceived by the Sri Lankan terrorist state as a state run by a terrorist organisation, which for the Tamils was a resistance movement with a credible ideology.

Open Letter to Han Ki-moon and John Holmes - UN Should not Let the War Criminals Escape in Sri Lanka
Wednesday, 03 June 2009

To: Ban Ki Moon and John Holmes ,
Dear UN officials, Parliamentarians, Senators, Journalists and those who have faith in Democracy,
As you know, it is unfortunate that the WEST's effort to bring the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) to the International Court of justice has failed mainly because of the shameful voting mechanism being adopted in which nations like Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Burma and other Asian countries voted in favour of Sri Lanka. This is in fact a shame for the true democracy; and is described as 'shocking & indefensible' (Lord Hannay of Chiswick),  'shameful' (Times May 30),  'disgraceful' (Times May 28),   'dismal failure' (London HRW ),  'a contradiction' (Czech Presidency),   'damaged credibility' (FT) and  'regrettable' (EU), is the evidence uncovered by the Times in a week long visit to Sri Lanka that at least 20,000 Tamils were killed on the beach by shelling as the Sri Lankan army closed in on the so called ' safe zones', demarcated for the civilians.

Are Tamils Stupid to fall an easy Prey to Sri Lankan Sinhala Cruel Chauvinists
Monday, 01 June 2009

We have been targeted by many new types of mails nowadays from some people who refer to them as "moderate" Tamils. For few months we received the mails and campaign to stop the genocide and killings of Tamils now the climate is changing. Yesterday I received a mail  from one of my friends that was sent a mail from a mail group which is run by Chandrika supporters asking for rebuilding Sri Lanka. Also a mail from Colombo Rotary club suggesting a temporary toilets for IDPs at cost for £80 (which would not even cost £20 in my costing). Many so called service orgnaisations are now stepping in to "HELP" our people.
