After visiting a displacement camp in Sri Lanka on Saturday and flying over the site of the last battle in the country's recently ended civil war, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the sites "appalling." "I have traveled around the world and visited similar places, but this is by far the most appalling scenes I have seen," Ban told CNN. "I sympathize fully with all of the displaced persons." Ban called for better humanitarian aid after interviewing some of the people regarding shortages of water and medicine. |

"More than 2,000 innocent civilians have been killed in the last 24 hours. The wholesale bombardment by Sri Lankan planes and shelling on a densely populated, non combatant civilian safe zone is state terrorism and a war crime," said S. Pathmanathan, the LTTE head of international relations on Sunday. "The Tamil people are dismayed that the United Nations and the International Community have failed in their obligations to protect the endangered civilians. [...] We only ask for an impartial relief effort similar to those extended to other international conflict zones by the UN and the international community in the recent past," he further said. |

In a statement issued by the White House in honor of World Press Freedom Day, President Barack Obama expressed his concern for Sunday Times Journalist J.S Tissainayagam and said his case was "emblematic of the hundreds of journalists who face intimidation, censorship, and arbitrary arrest." Tissainayagam and journalists like him are "guilty of nothing more than a passion for truth and a tenacious belief that a free society depends on an informed citizenry," said President Obama in his statement. |

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief Jeyalalitha came out in the open in favour of a separate "Tamil Eelam" (homeland for Tamils) in Sri Lanka, saying it alone would solve the decade-long ethnic strife in the island nation. "Separate Tamil Eelam is the only solution. Sri Lanka will not ensure equal status to Tamils. If the AIADMK-led alliance is elected in all the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, we will work for formation of separate Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka," she told an election meeting in Tamil Nadu. |

Full Text of the Press Release "..We welcome the attempts by the UN and its agencies to assist the civilian population and are ready to engage and cooperate with them to address the humanitarian needs of the population. We have taken into account the recent declarations by the G8 nations, the Whitehouse, Indian Ministers and the EU and other members of international community. We are in full agreement that the humanitarian crisis can only be overcome by the declaration of an immediate ceasefire. As the first step we have now announced this unilateral ceasefire and call upon the international community to pressure the Sri Lankan Government to reciprocate it..." |

LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is many things to many people-national leader, freedom fighter, revolutionary, guerrilla, killer, saviour, tyrant, visionary and terrorist. Lionised or demonised, depending on their standpoint. I cannot know what is going on in Prabhakaran's head, but I am certain he is neither frightened nor desperate. He is not afraid of death. He has been courting it since he was 17. He is an indefatigable warrior, one who is philosophically detached from all things tactical. Yet, paradoxically, in achieving his strategic goal of Tamil Eelam, he displays an unwavering attachment. |

The United Nations says nearly 6,500 civilians have been killed and 14,000 wounded in fighting in Sri Lanka over the past three months. The figures are contained in a U.N. document circulated among diplomatic missions in Sri Lanka in recent days and given to The Associated Press by a foreign diplomat Friday. The U.N. has declined to publicly release its casualty figures. The quarter-century civil war has flared in recent months as government forces pushed to crush the Tamil Tiger rebels in their remaining territory in the north. According to the U.N. figures, 6,432 civilians have been killed in the fighting since Jan. 20 and another 13,946 have been wounded. The casualties were reported as "verified data" in the document, which was given to The Associated Press by a foreign diplomat Friday. The U.N. has declined to publicly release its casualty figures and had no immediate comment on the document. |

Brian Senewiratne, Brisbane, Australia
As the entire civilized world, with the exception of ‘patriotic’ Sinhalese (which excludes the likes of myself), is aghast at the mass murder of Tamil civilians in Northern Sri Lanka, by the politico-military junta which calls itself the ‘Sri Lankan Government’, the options available to stop the slaughter of Tamils are limited.
No amount of protests, hunger strikes, self-immolations, human chains, endless letters, lobbying (deaf) politicians, calls for action by the impotent United Nations, the equally impotent Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) endorsed by the UN World Summit in 2005, will do anything to stop the genocide of the Tamil civilians, or their incarceration in concentration camps. This is not an attempt to underestimate the importance of the unprecedented massive rallies that have occurred all over the world, especially in Britain and Canada (which, indeed, should be escalated and expanded). |

To add further insult to Kevin Rudd's will to bring peace in Sri Lanka and minority tamils from Genocide, UK Telegraph reported that Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa is ignoring his and UK Prime Ministers Call. To quote, "............ President Rajapaksa said he had snubbed an intervention from British prime minister Gordon Brown and defied pressure from Western governments to show restraint. "British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd kept calling me during the past few days. I could not talk to them as I was busy with the New Year festivities. I ask them not to talk about a ceasefire or a pause in military operations. We gave the LTTE 48 hours but unfortunately the terrorists did not take the opportunity to free civilians," he said."
