Editorial Tamil Guardian 01 April 2009 As the Sri Lankan military continues to massacre Tamil civilians at will in Vanni, there have been increased murmurs of disquiet from the international community. The United States, for example, has, with a few words, surpassed India in its criticism of Sri Lanka's cold-blooded slaughter. The mass agitation in Tamil Nadu has not stirred the Central government to act. Instead, overwhelmed by the simplest of tasks expected of any aspiring great Power - ending a regional crisis - Delhi is paralyzed. Bewildered by the responsibility thrust upon it, the South Asian hegemon is simply hoping the problem will go away. The eruption of Tamil outrage and the ensuing nationalist mobilisation - in Tamil Nadu and the Diaspora - will, along with untrammeled Sinhala chauvinism, ensure this crisis will not disappear, but expand to become an important part of the international agenda. |

An engineer by profession, Sasikumar holds double masters degree in Engineering from Annamalai University (India) and Business Administration from the University of Phoenix (USA). He writes to transform the Indian politics into an issue based one.Towards the end of the presidential election season in the USA, President Mr. Obama (then Democratic presidential candidate) requested all Americans to go to the polling booth early to avoid last minute mishap and fulfill their right to vote and walk taller. Although I have been a staunch supporter of Mr. Obama, being an immigrant, I was unable to fulfill his request since I was only a permanent resident and not a citizen yet. Even though Mr. Obama was addressing the entire nation, I felt as if he was talking to me directly. However, I wondered how I can walk taller. |

In August 2007, at a press conference on the killing of the 17 aid workers by the Sri Lankan Special Task Force, Sir John Holmes the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs stated:”…. the record of safety of humanitarian workers here is one of the worst in the world". He was then branded by the Sri Lankan government as being a terrorist white tiger ( no longer threatened with extinction) in the pay of the LTTE. After the lapse of only two years where the human rights situation under the terrorist state has deplorably worsened, Holmes takes a complete right about turn as a “Daniel come to judgment”, hailed by the Sri Lankan government, and makes out that the LTTE was being responsible for the displaced civilians not moving towards government-controlled areas, while being luke warm on the atrocities of the Rajapakse government, singing praises at their humanitarian “efforts” towards the Tamils. We are at a quandary as to whether he was lying then or is lying now. He should just tell the truth. He had sufficient conscience to bother him in August 2007 but not sufficient to keep him honest in February 2009 for some inscrutable reason. |

Terror charges dropped as LTTE ( Tamil Tigers ) could not be proved as Terrorist Organisation in a Australian Court of Law THREE men were cleared of accusations they were members of a Sri Lankan terrorist group when charges were dropped in the Supreme Court yesterday.Aruran Vinayagamoorthy, 34, Sivarajah Yathavan, 38, and Arumugam Rajeevan, 42, were due to face trial on terrorism-related charges. They were accused of being members of the Tamil Tigers, providing money, support and resources to the group in their violent campaign against the Sri Lankan Government. Prosecutor Mark Dean, SC, told the court a new set of charges would be filed next week, in which each man would face charges only under the Charter of the United Nations Act. The court heard this would significantly narrow the scope of the case against them. |

To raise awareness in the Australian Community of the genocide that is occuring in the Tamil regions of Sri Lanka, Brisbane Tamil Youth are launching a black ribbon drive. We will be distributing black ribbons for a gold coin donation along with flyers informing the public of the humanitarian crisis that is occurring in Sri Lanka this very moment. The black ribbons are worn in rememberance of the innocent civilian and are also symbolic of the feelings of loss and mourning felt by Tamils worldwide as we hear about the plight our innocent brothers and sisters. We ask all of the Australian community to support us in these difficult times by wearing these ribbons as an action of solidarity and support. |

In memory of our people let us help the Australians Dear Friends, As Australian Tamils we are concerned about the plight of our people in our beloved home land. We are unable to provide any material help to our suffering brethren in the current situation, in contrast to our efforts to mobilise relief supplies in the aftermath of Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004. In the meantime closer to our adopted home a tragedy has unfolded last weekend, with hundreds of people being killed and thousands becoming homeless as a result of the bushfire which has engulfed parts of Victoria. It has been described as the “Darkest Day” and the “Worst Day in History”. |
